The New Year has begun and for a lot of us, that means resolutions. It’s a time when many of us focus on all of the ways we want to change; to be different in how we live our lives.

In years past, my resolutions have been bursting with self-aggression and judgment. I’ve focused on what I dislike most about myself and sworn to change it…until around March anyway when I usually realize that this negative approach doesn’t support sustaining the positive life I wish to lead.

This leads me to wonder, “What if, instead of focusing on what we wish to change in ourselves, we looked outward? What if our resolutions broaden our impact and change our communities and our world for the better? What if we resolve to be changemakers?”

If you’re like me, you might be wondering where to start? Here are 10 resolutions for changemakers young and old, wherever you are in the world:

  1. Practice conscious consumerism and support businesses that share your values, like B Corps. Check out this helpful, free guide from B Corp Roundpeg.
  2. Set up a Meal Train for a friend in need. This service provides a platform for community members to sign up to bring a meal to community members who have recently had surgery, given birth, are ill, or need support in other ways.
  3. Practice random acts of kindness and brighten the day or world of another!
  4. Volunteer! Whether it’s at your local food pantry, animal shelter or community events, volunteering is a great way to give back! My favorite volunteer activity is supporting our local salamander brigade each spring, helping amphibians safely cross the road and saving the lives of creatures that serve an important function in our ecosystem.
  5. Support members of your community through crowd-funding sites like GoFundMe. You can search by region or see what causes your Facebook friends have supported.
  6. Choose ocean-friendly choices when eating seafood. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch has lots of great info and an app to help inform choices!
  7. Know your recyclables! Check with your waste management provider to be clear on what they can and can’t recycle. Do they accept number 1 and 2 plastic? Or numbers 1-7? When you put items that can’t be recycled by your provider into your bin, you risk contaminating the recycling stream. Look into alternatives for those items your waste hauler won’t accept, like B Corp Preserve’s Gimme 5 program.
  8. Start a community challenge. Last summer, Badger hosted a plastic-free challenge in which 31 intrepid Badgers sought to create no plastic trash for one week. While we didn’t do it perfectly, we learned that a group of people making one small change can make a huge difference!
  9. Check your tire pressure regularly to maximize fuel efficiency and reduce your carbon footprint. And carpool whenever possible!
  10. Practice self-care! Taking good, loving care of ourselves is the foundation upon which all else is built. Love yourself well, and in doing so, expand your capacity to give to others and be a changemaker!

This year my resolution is to be the change I want to see in the world by continuing to do my best to make a difference, taking it one day at a time and starting with the list above. Together we can all be changemakers!
