Being a B Corp – B Impact Assessment

Next week’s winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year and here in New Hampshire, the frost of winter is setting in. While some despair, I revel in it! I love the rhythm of the seasons, the reminder that we are creatures in sync with the passage of time and that each season carries its own energy, lessons, and magic. As 2016 draws to a close and winter begins, we are reminded that now is the time to look inward, to take inventory, and to reflect on the activity and impact of recent times and decide what we wish to carry forward and what we wish to release.

Here at Badger, the end of 2016 is a particularly special time for introspection as we begin the work of completing our fourth B Impact Assessment (BIA), the rigorous recertification process that all B Corps must undergo every two years. The BIA is a revealing process. It asks us to dive deep into measuring our environmental and social impact by completing a series of questions that evaluate our business model and operational impact. In doing so, we provide supporting evidence that will then be assessed by B Lab, the non-profit third party that certifies all B Corps.

Sound intense? It is! This auditing process is hard work, but it’s work we believe in! I’ve heard it said that awareness is the first step to making change happen and that one must have a thorough and realistic understanding of the here and now in order to effectively vision and dream up what could be.

Completing our fourth BIA marks the end of one two-year cycle and the beginning of another. We celebrate all the growth that is the result of measuring our impact (more on that soon!) and look forward to establishing a new baseline for future growth. At Badger, perfection is not a destination we strive for. Instead, we work hard at constantly improving our impact, getting better at doing good, and making a greater difference in the world.

As winter’s cold and darkness enfold us, and we focus on the New Year ahead, we will be busy measuring our impact and laying the foundation for future progress. We will use this time to reflect on the light we wish to carry forward into next year and beyond.
