Badger Balm Benefit Corporation Inaugural Annual Report

You’ve probably read about our B Corp certification, but did you know that Badger helped to pass Benefit Corporation legislation in NH and was one of the first NH businesses to become a Benefit Corporation in January 2015?

Authentically Using Business as a Force for Good

While the legal purpose of a for-profit corporation is to make money, Benefit Corporations are legally required to pursue environmental and social benefit in addition to profit. Making the choice to become a Benefit Corporation enables a business to safeguard their mission by writing it into all they do and every choice they make. Benefit Corporations, which are also held to high standards of transparency and accountability, must publish an annual report every year to share publicly their successes and challenges from the past year. Why does this matter? When you purchase a tin of Badger Balm or a tube of our mineral sunscreen, we want you to know that you can trust what’s inside, what went into making it, and what we stand for as a company. We believe in transparently sharing the nuts and bolts of what it means to use business as a force for good.

Badger is a B Corporation

Hot Off the Presses

We are excited to share our very first Benefit Corporation Annual Report with you! In it, we talk about the ways that we have worked to make the world a better place in 2015. We also share the ways we hope to do better and our dreams for the future. We honestly and openly share how we run our business and the reasons behind our choices because we feel it is the right thing to do.

Highlights from Our Inaugural Annual Report

2015 was a busy and exciting year for us! Here are some highlights:

  • We expanded our workforce by 18.9%.
  • We raised Badger’s minimum wage to $13.80, 190% of the NH minimum wage.
  • We donated over $94,000 and lots of product through our Charitable Giving program.
  • We welcomed three new babies to our Babies-At-Work program.
  • We published fifty-one employee-authored blog posts, like this one; sharing transparently what’s on our minds and in our hearts here at Badger.
  • We worked with a team of five graduate students (including me, the author of this post, who happily became a full-time employee!) to create our first Environmental Management System (EMS). Our new EMS helps us to measure our environmental impact as well as compare and report on our progress from year to year.
  • We hosted our first-ever Suppliers’ Day, a two-day conference in which more than half of our key suppliers traveled to Badger headquarters to explore ideas for improving sustainability across our supply chain.
