Behind the Ingredients: Baobab Oil

My love affair with baobab oil started in 2011. Badger released Damascus Rose Face Oil and I was totally hooked. It was the first time that I had used a face oil that didn’t leave a greasy feeling, and because of this I wanted to know all its secrets.

I didn’t have to look much further than the ingredient list. There it was—the second ingredient in—baobab oil.

Bayo-what?

Baobab oil. It comes from the seeds of an awesomely funky tree in Central Africa. Every part of the tree is useful – fruit, seeds, leaves, flowers, and bark. But for our purposes, we’ll focus on this remarkable oil, which is cold-pressed from the seeds.

How awesome is baobab oil?

Baobab oil is pretty darn awesome. The seeds contain tons of protein, minerals, and a relatively high amount of essential amino acids. However, where baobab really shines is in its fatty acid profile. The oil is rich in omega 3, 6, and 9 thanks to its high proportions of linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and alpha-linolenic acids. Because of this, baobab oil is excellent for skin care as omega 3 and omega 6 are the building blocks of healthy cell membranes. In short, essential fatty acids help your complexion to glow.

But that’s not all!

The mystical powers of baobab extend beyond its chemical composition. Because if you're going to use an oil, it needs to feel good, right?

Baobab is what’s known as a “dry oil” – meaning it actually feels dry when you apply it to the skin. I prefer the blend of jojoba, baobab, and pomegranate oils. But you can use baobab on its own, if you wish.

And that is the magic that gives Badger’s face oils a non-greasy feel. I smooth a couple of drops into my skin and it instantly absorbs leaving behind a silky-smooth feel and a glowing complexion.
