Tips for Traveling with Kids (Giveaway)

Tips for Traveling with Kids Traveling can be challenging, and traveling with kids can be very challenging.  So we reached out to all of the Badger moms and dads and asked: what are your best tips for traveling with kids? Read their tips, and enter to win a travel survival kit valued at $95!

Timing

Traveling With KidsAll of the parents agree that timing and planning are tantamount for success.

Sarah, who works in our administration department, has two young children. She stressed the importance of thinking about the time you will arrive at your destination. She likes to time the trip around nap times.

She also allows enough time for bathroom stops and snack breaks. If all goes well, her family arrives with plenty of time to unwind and follow (as close as they can) their meal and bedtime routines.

Anna, our customer service supervisor, suggests little neck pillows and small fleece blankets for a comfortable car nap.

Kristina, who works in our accounting department said involving school-aged children in the planning process helps to engage them in the trip. She has her three children take turns planning the routes and choosing activities.

Snacks

Christina in customer service recently completed a road trip with her three-year-old and one-year-old sons. She suggested snacks that are unique to the trip. Special snacks make the trip a little more exciting.

Jason, our IT Badger, favors salty snacks for his kids. And Anna suggested a mystery snack bag. Surprise and discovery always make a trip go faster!

Coloring while Traveling with Kids
Kids of all ages love to color! And it’s a great way to pass the time.

Games

This was another popular tip for traveling with kids. In addition to screens and books, Badger parents had some unique road trip games.

Lauren in customer service likes to play the license plate game with her kids. The object is to try to identify license plates for each of the 50 states.

Emily in customer service says her kids like “guess my animal.” It’s similar to 20 questions, but the animal must be real and not extinct or imaginary. So everyone has a chance to guess.

Sara in sales says her li’l one loves his Etch A Sketch. Anna suggested several DIY games, including a cookie sheet with magnetic letters.

Jason and Anna both suggested a grab bag or box filled with surprise toys and games. Because the excitement of discovering what’s in the bag helps to pass the time.

Jessica in customer service likes to sing with her five- and seven-year-olds.

Practicality

Derek in our operations department suggests easy-to-reach spare clothes, paper towels, wipes and plastic bags. Because in his experience, “someone will puke.”

And on that note, if traveling with kids just sounds like too much of a headache, simply follow the advice of Emily in administration:

“Don’t.”

"Let it be easy and fun."
“Let it be easy and fun.”

I don’t have kids, but I can empathize because I travel with a sensitive and needy dog who can’t really tell me what she wants or when, like kids can – so it’s even harder! Treats, water, toys – not to mention poop bags, training clicker, and so much more are necessary. I love your sport sunscreen so I can stay outside all day and play with my dog in or out of the water. It works better than any other sunscreen I’ve tried and it doesn’t irritate my skin like other brands. I always bring it camping and a bottle of it lives in my backpack.

  • We live in Florida and it gets HOT in parked cars. Put a light colored towel over your carseat to keep the metal buckles from burning. You can also leave one of those blue frozen bricks on top of the carseat to keep it cool.

We carry disinfectant wipes and potty reducer or a small potty for when they just cant make it.

ALWAYS keep Badger sunscrren on hand and we also use AfterBire for when the mosquitos strike.

  • It’s important to have fun, but I think it’s equally important to ensure safety during travels as well.

If kids are carrying their own back pack, it might be a good idea to stash away their ID & contact info inside, as well as on themselves such as inside of their pockets in case they get separated from you.

Also, if you’re going to a large sized theme park during summer holidays where there are lots and lots of people out at the park, or international travel during the holiday season where you are literally bumping into people, you might want to consider investing in a child locator or a child cell phone, especially if there are many kids that you have to look after & or you have kids that are super curious that they run towards whatever their interest takes them.

Finally, it always helps to talk to your kids about the importance of safety and how keeping safe means being able to enjoy all the fun stuff uninterrupted.

When my kids were younger, I used to pack a “car bag” for them with all the usual stuff like crayons, coloring books, healthy snacks, etc. But they are older now (10 and 15) so they pack for themselves. I try and (usually) succeed in not interfering, but I provide items for them to choose from that will help them make good decisions. This includes stocking the pantry with organic low sugar snacks for them to pick from, laying out some new sketch books and pastels that I got just for the trip, and letting them pack whatever they want to wear without comment from me( even if it doesn’t match!:) We also take a trip to the Public Library for some books for the car or beach. One thing they both always ask for is their own tin of Badger Sleep Balm! They are both light sleepers and have trouble sleeping away from home, and the Sleep Balm is like a Magic Wand!! It really helps them unwind and get some good sleep so there is no drama from tired kids on our trip!

I love to travel with my “After Sun Balm” tin. I’m fair skinned and burn very easily. I also tend to not keep up with sunscreen applications like I should. The “After Sun Balm” helps to soothe the irritation that comes from the dryness (well, baking, really) of a sunburn and keeps it moist and hydrated so it heals much faster than without it. Plus, it smells divine! (I’d love to have it in a squeeze tube, though.)

  • We love badger sunscreen! For trips, snacks and waterbottles are a must, but we also carry notebooks for tic/tac/toe, hangman, and license plate games. A net for spontaneous bug catching. A wet facecloth rolled up in a mason jar works for cleaning up messes and having an extra cup around for whatever adventure we run into. Finally, when we’re beaching it, we keep some foot powder on deck to get the sand off before we try to put those shoes on again. Have a great summer!

  • I always travel with badger sleep balm… It’s nice to have a familiar scent, no matter where I’m spending the night!

Our favorite Badger product to travel with plus to use daily year round is Badger Damascus Rose Face Sunscreen. It not only offers great UVA & UVB protection, but the tinted variety, that I use, provides an all natural foundation. This product in both regular & tinted is the absolute best sunscreen product for the face I have ever used. When we travel, we also take mini travel editions of favorite games. Trivial Pursuit and 20 Questions top the list.

We always take Badger sunscreen with us – in the snow and in the summer! We especially like the SPF 30 Active when we are out sweating in a pit mine in the summer. Travel Tip – My daughter and I travel to music, singing in the car together. When she was small, we would pick an object out the window and make up a song about it, each doing a line. When she got older, we would pick an object outside and have to sing a line of a song that had that word in it (Moon = Blue Moon, Moon River, Cheriberibim, etc.), each taking turns picking a new object when we had exhausted the word (or our store of songs.) Now that she is an adult, we still travel together, and we still play these games – but now we create harmonies and share memories of the places we have been.

My kids always loved the square cardboard ‘scavenger hunt’ game. We also spent a lot of time with the ‘colors of cars’ game. Whoever can identify the most different colors of cars is the winner! It’s fun to bring along small prizes for the winners. I also always carried ‘consolation’ prizes, so everyone gets something.
Snacks are also important. I liked sippy cups for the youngest, and juice boxes for the older ones; both minimize spills in the car. Putting the snacks in individual size bags works well. Wipes and plastic bags are also essential. Car tapes or CDs with child singable songs are also fun.

  • I always like to put together a bag of activities that my kids haven’t seen before for road trips. One year it was window markers that let them draw on the windows. Other times it’s brain building puzzles like sudoku. The novelty keeps them entertained!

  • We use a lot of Badger products and recently my 4 year old discovered her love of Night Night Balm to help “put all of her parts to sleep.” My advice for travelling kids is to just take a deep breath and roll with whatever happens. It all gets easier…right?

  • As a kid, my sister and I each had our own “travel tub”. On the lid was a write-on, wipe-off map of the U.S. so we could follow our route and draw it on the map (to learn geography and avoid endless “are we there yet?”). Inside was our personal selection of one-person games, a deck of cards with endless group game ideas, stickers and coloring supplies, and a set of tapes from our favorite radio show, Adventures in Odyssey. And of course, we each had a stash of books!
